Proper planning can help ensure you have a worry-free cross-border trip when visiting friends or relatives outside Canada. Regardless of whether you've been gone for only a couple of hours, or for several days, when returning to Canada you will have to stop at a Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) office. Listed below are a few tips to get you on your way.
Bring Identification - Make sure you provide the appropriate identification for yourself and any children traveling with you, including any documents the country you intend to visit requires, such as passports, birth certificates and visas. Proper identification includes birth certificates, passports, citizenship cards, records of landing, permanent resident cards and certificates of Indian status. These will help prove your citizenship, address and identity when you return to Canada.
Planning Tips For Trip Outside Canada
Your holidays or family vacations are booked, your bags are packed and you're thinking that you may have everything you need, money, passport, tickets, and clothing for every occasion. Is there any thing missing I didn't do before my trip?
For almost 41% of Canadians who do not always travel with it, the answer is emergency medical travel insurance. Whether simply forgotten or deemed unnecessary, the fact is that travel health insurance should be a must-have before you leave the country.
When you are away from home even the most minor injuries or illnesses can become a major expense. So while an accident or illness can happen anywhere at anytime, emergency medical travel insurance helps to protect you from the unexpected costs that can come with a visit to a doctor or hospital outside of your home country.
A stay in a US hospital could run into a huge cost that your were not planning on and will take years to pay off.
If you're not worried about the costs, because you believe your province's health insurance plan will cover it, make sure you look into your province's coverage first. You may be surprised to learn that if your province's health coverage does extend outside of Canada it will likely be limited.
OHIP does not cover: but check to make sure things have not changed
- treatment that is medically unnecessary- health services that are rendered at a facility that is not a licensed hospital or licensed health facility
- treatment that is generally accepted by the medical profession in Ontario, as being experimental, or for research or for part of a study
- treatment rendered for an illness, disease condition or injury that arose inside Canada
- ambulance services or transportation costs
- other services specifically set out in the regulations as uninsured or otherwise not listed as insured.

Should I obtain additional insurance coverage for my absence from Canada?
Yes. The ministry strongly recommends that you do, whether you are absent from Canada for a few minutes or for an extended time. OHIP does not insure or pay for all out-of-country medical services. Also, the amount of funding provided by OHIP will not usually cover the full cost of any health services that you do obtain outside of Canada. You should therefore, obtain supplementary health insurance from a private insurance company to provide you with additional coverage during your absence. It is also recommended that you understand the terms and conditions of the additional insurance coverage you have purchased and the implications of any pre-existing health conditions on your insurance coverage. To obtain private insurance contact a private insurance company of your choice.
Some things I have learnt from others;
Adults traveling across the border who are not parents or guardians, make sure you get written permission from the parents or guardians to be responsible of the children, including the name and all contact information of the parent or guardian.
Divorced, separated or even married to the child's other parent, bring the other parent's written permission to take the child over the border. Include all (work and home) contact information so border guard can call the other parent if necessary.
If traveling with a group you should travel in the same vehicle as their children when arriving and returning to the border.
There is so much to know and do before you travel abroad so please make sure you do you research before heading out on your trip, after all you want the trip to be enjoyable and have lasting memories and like anything it takes planning.
